FAQs
What is contra?
Contra dancing is an American reinvention of English ceilidh or barn-dance, focusing on flowing movements and interactions between dancers.
Can I come?
Yes! All dances are taught from scratch on the day, and beginners are always welcome.
We suggest arriving earlier on (or even better, in time for the beginners workshop) if you’ve never danced contra before, and the first few dances will go through some of the common moves we’ll be using through the evening.
What do I need?
Bring comfortable shoes, comfortable clothes (swirly skirts or kilts optional) and a bottle of water.
You don’t need to bring a partner. You can ask anyone to dance and most people dance with lots of different people over an evening. Anyone can dance with anyone and we’ll be calling without gendered terms to make it clear that anyone can ask anyone to dance.
